Cross Country Teams Prepare for CCAA Championships

The post-season gets started this weekend with the CCAA Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships at Ontario’s Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park on Saturday, October 22, hosted by Cal Poly Pomona…the men’s 8K race will get underway at 10:00 a.m. and the women’s 6K race will follow at 11:00 a.m.…the full cross country post-season schedule for men’s and women’s teams:

Women (6K, 16 teams) - Results

In a final tune-up before the CCAA Championships, Sonoma State led all CCAA teams with a 6th-place finish…the Seavolves’ Analicia Garcia topped the 167-runner field with her time of 21:02.2… it was the third-best time in the CCAA this year and bettered her previous school record by nine seconds…Cal State Monterey Bay freshman Megan Perko was 34th with a time of 23:32.1; Myha Castro of San Francisco State was 49th with a time of 24:05.3.

The Pioneers were led by sophomore Jesus Leon, who finished 42nd with a time of 26:41.2.

Men (Invitational 8K, 3 teams) – Results

Senior Connor Henderson was the Otters’ top runner with a time of 24:31.6, good for an 8th-place showing.


Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (Claremont, Calif.)

Women (6K, 13 teams) – Results
    1. Cal Poly Pomona   56

The Broncos cruised to an easy win, finishing 5-11-12-13-15…senior Elizabeth Olvera finished 5th with a time of 22:32.3…Araceli Servin finished 11th (22:45.3) just one second off a top-ten finish.

Three Cal Poly Pomona men competed in the 8k men's race…top finisher was freshman Adrian Diaz (7th; 25:51.1) 


Cougar Challenge (San Marcos, Calif.)

Men (8K, 5 teams) – Team Results | Individual Results
    1. Cal State San Marcos   22

The Cougars won their own event, finishing 1-2-3-6-10 en route to a 28-point win…Vahagn Isayan (25:16; his second win of the year), Josh Litwiller (25:17), and Easton Tackett (25:23) topped the field.

Natalie Rodriguez topped the field wth her time of 17:30 posting her second 5K win of the year, but it wasn't enough to push the Cougars to the team title…Raelyn Werley’s time of 17:55 was good for fifth place and is one of the top 10 times the CCAA this season.



CCAA Championships preview
Chico State enters the Championships as the favorite in both the men’s and women’s races…Wildcat William Reyes will try to win the men’s race in consecutive seasons since James Nielsen of UC San Diego in 1998 and 1999…six of the top ten men’s times in the 8K this year have been by Chico State runners…Cal Poly Pomona runners hold down the other four spots…Bronco Mark Huizar is the only runner it the Conference to have two of the top 10 times this season…a Chico State runner has won the event for eight straight years and 10 of the past 11…other men’s runners who could contend for the top spot are Drew Feldman and Benji Preciado of San Francisco State…the Chico State women's team is deep and talented…defending champion McCall Habermehl and three other teammates have battled health issues; Habermehl has run just once this season, but may be ready for the meet…Wildcat Sadie Gastelum has two of the top 10 times in the CCAA this year…the individual championship should be extremely competitive…in addition to Habermehl and Gastelum, Sonoma State’s Analicia Garcia has three of the CCAA’s top ten times the year and has broken the school record on more than one occasion this season…Natalie Rodriguez of Cal State San Marcos has the best 6K time in the CCAA this year (20:49.54), while Laura Aceves of Cal State San Bernardino has won two 5K races this year.



Last Year
Chico State was a double winner for the eighth straight time, taking both the men’s and women’s team titles…McCall Habermehl won the women’s race (http://www.goccaa.org/news/2015/12/30/2015_CCAA_WXC_Champs.aspx?path=wcross) with a time of 21:33.1, just :00.4 ahead of teammate Sadie Gastelum, the closest finish in CCAA history…Chico State’s Will Reyes won the men’s race (http://www.goccaa.org/news/2015/12/30/2015_CCAA_MXC_Champs.aspx?path=mcross) with a time of 24:13.6 seconds…his margin of victory of 15.6 seconds was the largest since Vicente Moreno of Stanislaus State won the race in 2007 by 19.5 seconds.…team results from a year ago:

USTFCCCA Division II West Region Poll

There was not regional poll for the week of October 16…the placement of every CCAA men’s team in the most recent United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCAA) west region poll (10/12/2016) has not changed in the last three weeks; on the women’s side, Chico State slipped to No. 2 and UC San Diego to No. 6 in the latest regional poll:
