UC SAN DIEGO soccer player David Bakal was named 2010-11 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced at the CCAA Executive Council Spring Meetings in Burlingame.
The award is voted on and selected by the Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) of the 11-member institutions.
A senior from Piedmont, Calif., and four-year member of the UC San Diego men’s soccer team, Bakal totaled five goals and six assists for 16 career points while starting 51 matches. As a senior, he ranked third on the Tritons with five points and scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over Cal State East Bay.
Bakal graduated Summa Cum Laude with a biology degree in March. His list of academic accolades include Provost honors, 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team recognition, four-time CCAA All-Academic Team honors, two-time National College Athlete Honor Society, 2011 UC San Diego Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award and 2011 UC San Diego Outstanding Senior Award finalist.
Bakal’s community service involvement includes participating in the Voices and Hands for the Right to Health Care organization, Adopt-a-Family Holiday Gift Giving program, Make-a-Wish Foundation and serving as a Florence Elementary School mentor.
Interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, Bakal is studying for the MCAT, which he will take in mid-June. He will then apply to medical school with the goal of beginning classes in the fall of 2012. Bakal also plans to travel overseas and hopes to continue playing soccer. |

Kelly Fogarty, UC San Diego (Track & Field)

UC SAN DIEGO track and field standout Kelly Fogarty was named 2010-11 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced at the CCAA Executive Council Spring Meetings in Burlingame.
A senior from Danville, Calif., Fogarty was a four-year NCAA Division II National Championship qualifier in track and field for the Tritons. She concluded her collegiate career as a two-time All-American in the 100 and 200 meter events and a 2010 All-American in the 4x400 relay.
Fogarty is a four-time CCAA champion in the 100-meter and three-time winner in the 200-meter dashes. She twice was part of the conference’s 4x100 meter relay championship team and helped the Tritons win the 4x400 relay title in 2010.
In 2008, Fogarty was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year and Co-Athlete of the Meet in 2011. She was selected UC San Diego’s Athlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011, and is a NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship nominee.
Additionally, Fogarty is the UC San Diego school record-holder in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Fogarty graduated Cum Laude with a degree in human biology in March. Her list of academic accolades include Provost Honors, three-time United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team selection and four-time All-CCAA Academic Team member.
Fogarty also has been recognized as a two-time National College Athlete Honor Society recipient and the winner of the 2011 UC San Diego Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete.
When not competing or focusing on her academics, Fogarty served as a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative in her junior and senior years and was part of the organization’s executive board in 2010-11. While a member of SAAC, she gave her time to the Adopt-a-Family Gift Giving program, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Little All-Stars and Team-Up.
Fogarty’s future plans include studying for the MCAT and completing her medical school applications. She plans to apply to medical school for the Fall 2012 admission cycle. She will be performing cancer research at the Sanford Burnham Medical Research Institute and volunteering at local hospitals this summer.
While preparing for medical school, Fogarty plans to train for open track meets with an eye toward competing at the Olympic Trials. |
