CAL POLY POMONA baseball player Travis Taijeron was named the 2010-11 California Collegiate Athletic Association Male Athlete of the Year. The CCAA Athlete of the Year is selected by the league's Sports Information Directors and is named at the conference's annual spring meetings.

A senior outfielder from San Diego, Calif., capped an impressive collegiate career by being selected an NCAA Division II All-American in both the Daktronics and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) award announcements. He also swept the Daktronics ABCA/Rawlings and NCBWA West Region Player of the Year awards, and was named the CCAA’s Most Valuable Player.

During his final collegiate season, Taijeron led the CCAA in virtually every offensive category as he batted .392, clubbed 16 home runs, scored 59 runs, collected 51 RBI, tallied 148 total bases, walked 50 times, posted a .744 slugging percentage, recorded a .534 on-base percentage and had a 1.000 fielding percentage.

Taijeron batted .542 over the final month of the season to help Cal Poly Pomona make a late-season run that resulted in a CCAA Tournament berth and NCAA Regional appearance.

At the conclusion of the year, Taijeron picked up even more honors, including selection to the West Region All-Tournament Team and the College Baseball Lineup Division II All-Star Team along with inclusion as a semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Award, given annually to the top Division II baseball student-athlete.

UC SAN DIEGO softball player Camille Gaito was named the 2010-11 California Collegiate Athletic Association Female Athlete of the Year. The CCAA Athlete of the Year is selected by the league's Sports Information Directors and is named at the conference's annual spring meetings.

A junior pitcher from San Rafael, Calif., Gaito was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and Daktronics All-American while leading the Tritons to their first-ever NCAA Division II national championship.

Gaito, who was named the West Region’s Daktronics Pitcher of the Year and CCAA Pitcher of the Year, concluded her junior campaign with a 35-4 record, 0.75 ERA, 208 strikeouts and 32 complete games. She ranks second in the nation in wins, ERA and walks per seven innings (.60), while her ERA is the lowest of any pitcher in the country with more than 20 appearances.

The UC San Diego right-hander pitched every inning in the Tritons’ NCAA Tournament run, going 9-0 with nine complete games while striking out 62 and walking 11 in 67 innings.

Gaito became UC San Diego’s all-time leader in pitching victories when she recorded her 62nd in a win over C.W. Post in the opener of the NCAA Championship in Salem, Va. She added three more to her total and will enter next season with 65 career victories.

The Tritons junior also established single-season UC San Diego records for wins (35), appearances (47), innings pitched (262.1), strikeouts (208), complete games (32) and saves (4).
