CARSON -- In the spirit of the holidays that are among us, the
Cal State Dominguez Hills' Student Athlete Advisory Committee
(SAAC) officially has adopted the holiday spirit this season,
encompassed by three community service activities and its annual
holiday party before buckling down for finals this week.
SAAC began its tradition of yearly giving at the annual City of
Carson Mayor Jim Dear Turkey "Give-A-Way" on November 20.
Originally scheduled for a noon start, inclement weather postponed
the delivery of the turkeys until later that evening, an obstacle
SAAC President Ashley Clark and teammates Elayne Greer, Cambrea
Horn, Elizabeth Krieger, Abbey Prusa, Shelbi Vopnford simply
brushed away en route to helping members of the Carson and
surrounding communities enjoy a Thanksgiving feast by handing out
and helping carry turkeys to their residents' cars.
A trip to the L.A. Food bank followed on December 6, with members
from the softball and baseball teams volunteering an afternoon of
their time in downtown Los Angeles to separate non-perishable food
items for packaging.
Softball players in SAAC Treasurer Lauren Harper, Brittany Brenner
and Destiney Ruiz, and baseball players Josh Corrales, Matt Faigh,
David Fair, Brooks Noble, Brandon Quezada and Cody Yates teamed up
with other organizations within the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cal State
Northridge, Target and a fraternity from USC to help sort 25
pallets of food collected from various charitable donations around
the area, which will be distributed to those in need.
