Chico State Wins Second-Straight CCAA Championship
SAN RAMON – Just under four months ago a vote of league coaches predicted Chico State as the 2015-16 California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball Champion and despite a loss to Cal State LA Saturday night the Wildcats have proven the coaches right, snagging their second-consecutive CCAA Regular-Season Title.
This year's CCAA post-season tournament field returns to an eight team men's field with first-round games to be played at the top four seeds' campus arenas on Tuesday, March 1. The four teams to come out of the first-round games will advance to Stockton Arena, the site of the semifinal and final rounds, which are scheduled for March 4-5.
The Wildcats, who finished 16-4 in CCAA play have clinched to top spot and are joined by No. 2 seed UC San Diego (15-5) , No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona (14-6), and No. 4-seed Humboldt State in earning a first-round home game.
Chico and San Diego will have to face No. 8 seeded Cal State LA and No. 7 seeded Sonoma State for the second time in a week. The Wildcats and Tritons both fell to the Golden Eagles and Seawolves, respectively, Saturday to wrap up 2015-16 regular-season play. On the season, Chico State is 1-1 against LA, while UCSD has a 0-1 record against Sonoma.
Cal Poly Pomona locked in as the No. 3 seed over a week ago, but learned they would play San Francisco State (10-10) following tonight's Gator win over Cal State San Bernardino. Despite finishing with an identical 12-8 record, Cal State Monterey Bay will play as the No. 5 seed after losing a head to head tie breaker with Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks won the only game played with the Otters this season.
