Four CCAA Players Taken on Final Day of MLB First-Year Player Draft

Bret Montgomery was taken in the 46th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

WALNUT CREEK - The final day of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft finished with four California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) players being selcted on Wednesday.

Cal State Stanislaus senior right-hander Eric Cendejas was the first CCAA player selected when the Los Angeles of Anaheim used their 33rd-round pick on the Warriros' hurler.

Other CCAA players chosen were Chico State right-hander Michael Gleason (34th round, Boston Red Sox), right-handed pitcher Josh Krist of Cal Poly Pomona (39th round, Seattle Mariners) and Bret Montgomery, a right-hander from Cal State Dominguez Hills, who was drafted in the 46th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Wednesday's four draftees, combined with six players picked on Tuesday, ran the total of CCAA players drafted this year to 10. It marked the second straight year that 10 CCAA players were chosen in the Major League Baseball annual draft.

Cendejas, who was born in Anaheim, grew up in Corona and played two seasons at nearby Santa Ana College, became the fifth Cal State Stanislaus player to be drafted in the last three years.

Cendejas completed a two-year career at Cal State Stanislaus as one of the top pitchers on the staff. He led a Warriors pitching staff that ranked second in the CCAA in with a 4.40 ERA in 2010.

Cendejas posted a 3.93 ERA, 5-7 record and three saves. He struck out 63 in 66 1/3 innings. During his junior season, he set a school record with a 1.80 ERA. In 19 appearances Cendejas posted a 4-1 mark with five saves and 33 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Fresh off an outstanding senior season that resulted in a team-high seven victories and several postseason honors, including being named third team All-American, Gleason became the sixth Chico State player in the last six seasons to be drafted by a major league organization.

Gleason, 7-3 on the year and the staff leader in strikeouts (90) and innings pitched (94), emerged as the Wildcats¹ ace in 2010 after appearing in 12 games and throwing 21 innings as a junior. For his efforts, Gleason earned first team All-CCAA and a pair of All-West Region honors before being named to the Daktronics All-America third team.

Appearing in a team-high 22 games, Krist posted a 3-2 record, 3.68 ERA and seven saves. In 29 1/3 innings, the Broncos' reliever allowed 35 hits, 13 runs (12 earned), walked 11 and struck out 23.

A second team All-CCAA pick, Montgomery recorded a 6-3 record, 2.94 ERA and three complete games in 13 appearances, including 12 as a starter. In 98 innings, he surrendered 74 hits, 38 runs (32 earned), walked 29 and struck out a team-high 94 batters.

The highlight of Montgomery's 2010 season came when he tossed a no-hitter against Cal State L.A. on Feb. 13.
