LA JOLLA - The Chico State men's and women's track teams are currently in first place of two days of the 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Association Track & Field Championships being held on the campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla.
The Chico State men scored 71 points and are ahead of UC San Diego (36), Cal State Stanislaus (30), Cal State L.A. (20), and Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona with 19 points each.
On the women's side, Chico State tallied 58 points and are in front of UC San Diego (52), Cal State L.A. (33), San Francisco State (27), Cal Poly Pomona (15), Humboldt State (9) and Cal State Stanislaus (1).
During Friday's action, Chico State swept the decathlon as Talor Fuler won the event with 6,802 points and was followed by teammates J. Patrick Smith (6,668) and Brian Beeman (6,392).
The Wildcats also picked up 10 points as Eric Wright won the hammer throw with a mark of 183-11. The Wildcats' final win of the day came in the 10,000 meters as Brent Handa won the event in a time of 32:09.08.
On the women's side, junior Stephanie LeFever won the heptathlon with 5,161 points and finished ahead of teammate Linda Rainwater, who placed second with 4,938 points.
LeFever also won the women's long jump with a mark of 18-10.50. San Francisco State's Luisa Musika won the discus with a throw of 147-11 and Theresa Richards of UC San Diego captured the javelin with a toss of 142-07.
In the women's 10,000 meter, Chico State swept the top three spots and was led by junior Julie Shaw, who paced the field in a time of 37:11.45.
