Hawaii Pacific 5, UC San Diego 1

Waipahu, Hawaii - The UC San Diego women's tennis team dropped a 5-1 decision on Thursday to Hawaii Pacific in the NCAA West Regional, as the match result ended the Tritons' 2010 postseason hopes.

UCSD, a squad that won its seventh-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association earlier in the season, concludes the year with a 13-9 overall record. In 2009, the Tritons were also knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by HPU.

The Lady Sea Warriors, improving to 19-4 so far in 2010, will advance to the Round of 16 to be held in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Junior Natalie Varnay recorded UCSD's lone point on Wednesday as she defeated HPU's Tinka Mihova at the No. 2 singles position, 6-2, 6-1.

The host Lady Sea Warriors swept through the three doubles matches to start the contest and eventually got the deciding point on a victory at the No. 6 singles spot.

The Tritons, finishing the year with a No. 15 national ranking, concluded the CCAA regular season with a dramatic title-clinching victory at home over Cal State Stanislaus on April 17. The two squads entered that match with identical 8-1 conference marks.

LAIE, Hawaii -- For the second consecutive postseason, the BYU Hawaii Seasiders ended the Cal State Stanislaus women's tennis team's season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The third-ranked BYU Hawaii (29-0) fended off the Warriors, 5-0, after Cal State Stanislaus (8-6) challenged the Seasiders during doubles play.

"It was really a lot closer than the 5-0 score," CSUS head coach Verek Visaraga said. "We played them really tough in doubles, especially at No. 1."

Against the No. 1 ranked doubles tennis team in NCAA Division II, Verena Preikschas and Katie Eng took BYUH's duo Yuan Jia and Elwen Li all the way to 8-6. Last year, Jia-Li won 8-0.

The Warriors' No. 2 team of Vanesa Reibstein and Brianna McClintock dropped their close match, 8-4, against Ayako Ikeda and Shawni Porter.

At No. 3, BYUH's Jenny Chin and Salina Aranda also won by the same score, 8-4, over Stanislaus' Arina Polonvikova and Lexy Harrington.

The Seasiders, champions of the Pacific West Conference, got two singles points they needed for five team points to advance at No. 5 and No. 6.

Chin got by Heather Cotter, 6-1, 6-0 and Aranda beat Erin McGurty, 6-0, 6-1.

In postseason play the match ends when a team reaches five points.

At No. 1 singles, #3 Jia edged Preikschas, 7-5, before the second set was able to start. After dropping their first sets, both Eng and Polovnikova were leading in the second before it was called.
