ORLANDO, Fla. - In its first event of the spring season, the top-ranked Chico State men's golf team is tied for fifth place after 36 holes of the inaugural Division II Golfweek Spring Invitational that is being contested at the par-72, 6,982-yard Independance Course at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.
Led by senior Sylvester Gama and sophomore Kyle Souza, who carded 2-over par scores of 74, the Wildcats shot a second-round score of 11-over par 299 and are currently at 20-over par 596 heading into Tuesday's final round.
Nova Southeastern is the second-round leader with 13-over par total of 589 and holds a two-shot advantage over West Florida (591) in the 18-team tournament. Lynn University (592) is third and followed by Lander University (594). Chico State and St. Edwards are tied for fifth.
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member Cal State Monterey Bay is also in the field and is in 15th place with a score of 47-over par 623.
Lynn University's Steven Brame heads into the final round as the individual leader with a 4-under par score of 140, three-shots ahead of Carson Newman's Gavin Hay and Lander's Roberto Nasalli-Rocca. Both players are at 1-under par 143.
Chico State senior Lucas Delgado is tied for eighth place with a 2-over par total of 146 to lead all CCAA players. Delgado carded a 3-over par 75 on Tuesday after an opening-round 1-under par 71.
Anthony Valdez is tied for 34th at 8-over par 152 to lead Cal State Monterey Bay.
