WALNUT CREEK — Cal State Stanislaus’ Verena Preikschas and Katie Eng were named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Most Valuable Player and Freshman of the Year, respectively, in a vote of conference coaches, it was announced on Tuesday.
UC San Diego junior Anita Athavale was named CCAA Newcomer of the Year, while her coach, Liz LaPlante, was selected Coach of the Year after leading the Tritons to a 10-0 record and extending the program’s conference winning streak to 58 matches.
The conference champion Tritons had a league-high six players named All-CCAA while Cal State Stanislaus, a first-year program, placed four players on the first team.
Preikschas, a freshman from Arnsberg, Germany, posted a 10-0 mark while playing at the No. 1 singles spot and teamed with Eng to go undefeated in doubles. Eng registered a 6-1 mark at No. 2 singles.
Athavale, a transfer from UC Davis, recorded a 7-1 singles record, including 4-1 at No. 3, and was 10-0 in doubles.
Joining Preikschas and Eng on the first team were Vanesa Reibstein (Cal State Stanislaus) at No. 3 singles, Val Tang (UC San Diego) at No. 4 singles, Michelle Stock (Cal Poly Pomona) at No. 5 singles and Heather Cotter (Cal State Stanislaus) at No. 6 singles. Jackie Trendt (Cal Poly Pomona), Taskeen Bains (UC San Diego) and Natalie Varnay (UC San Diego) were first team at-large picks.
The six-member second team consists of Ina Dan (UC San Diego), Stephanie Luk (Sonoma State), Tessa Tran (UC San Diego), Dana Carollo (Sonoma State) and Jennifer Chow (Cal Poly Pomona).
