Cal State L.A. to Host BJK Event

LOS ANGELES – The 12th annual Billie Jean King and Friends Event will be held on Oct. 17, 2009, at the Langham Huntington Hotel & Spa in Pasadena. The public is invited to join us as we celebrate Billie Jean King's 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom that she received from President Obama on August 12. King was one of 16 who were awarded America's highest civilian honor.

Billie Jean's special guest of honor this year will be one of the most honored writers in the country, Frank Deford, who will receive the 2009 Joe Shapiro Humanitarian Award. Deford served as national chairman of the Cystic Fybrosis Foundation for 16 years and he remains chairman emeritus. His daughter passed away from cystic fibrosis and he wrote a book about her, “Alex: The Life of a Child,” which was made into a movie.

As a journalist, Deford has been elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters. At Sports Illustrated, he was voted by his peers as U.S. Sportswriter of the Year six times. His work has appeared in virtually every medium. He is the author of 15 books and is currently working on his 10th novel. Deford is also an award-winning correspondent on the HBO show, “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.”

The event is the major fund-raiser for the athletic department with proceeds benefiting the student-athlete scholarship fund at Cal State L.A. Billie Jean King is one of Cal State L.A.’s most famous alumna and this event has thus far generated more than \$1.8 million in proceeds directed toward scholarships.

The Shapiro Award is presented in memory of Joe Shapiro, who was a member of the Billie Jean King Executive Committee and who worked enthusiastically to assist student-athletes in reaching their educational and athletic goals. The Shapiro Award is given annually to an individual whose work and service to the community promote a positive and lasting impact. Past recipients have included King, Maxine Waters, Chris Evert, Dr. Sally Ride, Patricia Cornwell, Maria Shriver and last year’s winner, Anne Douglas.

Shapiro was also a teacher at Cal State L.A. and the husband of tennis Hall of Famer Pam Shriver.

Tennis analyst and Deford’s fellow “Real Sports” correspondent Mary Carillo will serve as the celebrity Master of Ceremonies.

A tennis clinic that will include a luncheon with Billie Jean King will begin at 9 a.m. on the Cal State L.A. campus.

There are several sponsorship opportunities still available for this popular event. For more information about these opportunities, call (323) 343-3080.
