 2011-12 Male Athlete of the Year

Kyle Souza, Chico State (Men's Golf)

  A senior from Livermore, Souza helped lead the Wildcats’ men’s golf team to a national championship runner-up trophy this past season. The three-time All-American was the 2010-11 NCAA Division II champion. He was the lone Division II finalist for the Ben Hogan Award, presented annually to collegiate golf’s top player.

This past season, Souza finished first in the top 10 in every tournament he competed in, posting six individual medalist honors, three second-place showings, while leading the Wildcats’ to six team wins.
Souza tied for the CCAA title before losing in a playoff and finished sixth at the Amir Ari Invitational, which featured most of the nation’s top Division I programs. He finished ahead of four players ranked among Division I’s top-10 at the time. Souza also finished second at the West/Central Super Regional. He boasted a stroke average of 70.9 and 23 sub-par rounds out of 33 this year.
Souza, the 2011 NCAA champion, won eight career tournaments and broke the school record with 22 top-5 and 31 top-10 career finishes. Named to the All-America team for the third straight time this week, Souza is a four-time All-West Region and All-CCAA selection.

2011-12 Female Athlete of the Year

Samantha Middleborn, Cal State San Bernardino  (Volleyball)

A senior from Rialto, Middleborn was the 2011 consensus women’s volleyball NCAA Division II National Player of the Year for a second consecutive season, a first in CCAA history. She led the nation in blocks/set, second in hitting percentage and seventh in points/set—the only player in the country to rank inside the top 7 in each of those categories.
A five-time conference player of the week and two-time CCAA Player of the Year, she led her team to a 30-0 regular season record – Cal State San Bernardino’s first unbeaten regular season—a fourth consecutive conference championship in her career and the program’s sixth straight.
Middleborn led the Coyotes to the Elite Eight for the fourth consecutive year and helped them to hosting rights for the Elite Eight, where top-ranked Cal State San Bernardino lost to four-time NCAA Champion, Concordia-St. Paul in the title match.
A three-time All-American with five career All-American honors, Middleborn was granted a tryout for the 2012 U.S. national team. She completed her career with five school records including hitting percentage and block assists. She also established CCAA single-season records for career hitting percentage and block assists in a season.
